As a young lad from the age of four I grew up in a household filled with auto enthusiasts restoring vintage automobiles and wood working. As I continued to grow I also advanced in many restoration skills and wood crafting. There came a point my own personal restoration project in the 80s came to a holt because of the lack of knowledge in the upholstery trade. I had executed all other trades in the restoration processes except upholstery. A friend of mine introduced me to a canvas and upholstery shop in Massachusetts that could assist me in the project. I went on my friend suggestion. I'm glad I did. My thirst for information on anything mechanical or involves fabrication with a hands approach always captivated my attention. I watched with intense interest as he masterfully created something from nothing, that was satisfying to me. This upholstery shop then saw the ability and attention to detail I possessed in the abundance of questions I had for him. He in returned gave me an opportunity to work part time to help him with every day tasks at the shop. It was the classic Karate Kid scenario. I pretty much did every thing else but. I did how ever pick a lot of staples. I was persistent to see what I could make of the trade that he provided for me. After several years of intense learning I was comfortable enough to leave my primary job to pursue the upholstery trade full time. His philosophy was " if the sewing needle is going up and down he is happy". He taught me to be diversified to sew everything at the best of my abilities and not to just master one but to have fun learning many. Over the years of the trade I have been privileged enough to provide that same very skill set of masterfully creating something form nothing for others. He also said a phrase that I carry with me to this day. "Be happy as to what you do and make others happy doing it". And he added that extends beyond work.
